LYRICAL LANDSCAPES | Poster Series Design
Lyrical Landscapes is a poster design project that focuses on communicating information about a series of activist poets. The goal was to create a shared theme across all three posters, and emphasize the use of type as image.
Research
Mind Map + Initial Concepts
A key point about each of the poets featured in these posters is that they were all extremely expressive, and sought to share that expression with others. To communicate that, bold colors were used alongside empty space.
Typographic Exploration
Both analog and digital forms of type manipulation were explored to create an eye-catching background image for each poster. The idea of space, whether taking up space or empty space, was explored.
Digital Ideation
Refinement of Poster 1
For this poster, the idea of using the author's own poetry in their poster was explored. The overarching design was inspired by a single line in Dr. Eve L. Ewing's poem Eschatology. The line in question was "in fact, all the creative ways our people greet each other may be the icing on this flaming trash cake hurtling through the ether". The analogy of space fit so well with the play on negative space, and it became the backbone of the series.

Final Poster Series
I continued the contrasting themes of expression/boldness and silence/emptiness across this poster series. Each poster featured a primary color that associated with a part of their expression. Blue was chosen for Dr. Ewing because it represented education and productivity. Yellow was given to Anais Duplan because it represented freedom and authenticity. Orange was associated with Aime Cesaire because it represented passion and intensity.
